Stopping on Main street…

What’s the main thing you stop for?

I’m not talking about traffic, but life. What causes you to pause and pay attention for a moment? What makes you change direction in life? What decides the next step for you? What’s the main thing in your life?

This sign is likely in every small town in America, but when I saw it the other day, I stopped to take a picture and had a flood of thoughts come to me.

Some want me to stop doing the main thing in my life…

I’m not going to stop doing what I can, as a Christian, to glorify God and serve Him by serving and helping others.

Some don’t stop when they're supposed to…

Unfortunately, we all see folks get into something that they shouldn’t, and while we encourage them to stop, they just keep going…but we need to keep going, in our help for them too.

Sometimes we miss things, because we don’t stop, like we should…

Stop and smell the daisy’s (or is that roses - whichever), is a true thing. We miss many little blessings and opportunities to serve, because we don't stop.

Sometimes stopping is a pain, because we are wanting to move forward…

God teaches us patience as we are stopped, and sometimes He has us completely stopped to give us an opportunity to seek Him more.

Stopping takes patience, which I don’t have…

I really dislike patience, but shouldn’t. I learn so much as I have to stop and wait on the Lord, because His timing and grace are perfect and always exactly what I need.

Stop signs, in life, are not always posted and obvious…

Walking with the Lord is a daily thing, and if we try (we aren't called to be perfect), we will know when to stop and when to start what we are supposed to do.

Stopping for someone else is not always fun…

I often feel like others are in the way, when I’m driving, and it frustrates me. Life has people that stop us too, but God as a reason for those stopping times…maybe it’s to help them.

Stopping can save you from great danger…

How many times have you been stopped, on the road, and realized that you just missed an accident? God stops us to protect us form things we may not ever know are ahead.

Stopping is a good time to rethink your direction…

When you do sit back and stop, it gives you reflection of what God has been doing and what He has ahead or you. The pause in our lives will help us get clarity for the next step.

Stop signs can seem to be in the wrong spot sometimes…

I know a couple of stop signs that don’t match their location, but God puts them places that don’t always make sense to us, because His ways are way higher than ours.

Lessons Learned: Stop signs have a purpose, and I need to see what God has in store because of each one.

Thoughts: What stop signs are you avoiding?

  1. But traffic and life are much alike in the arena of "stopping." People used to stop at stop signs. Complete stops, not rolling stops or going through the intersection like the STOP sign was not even there. That mentality has invaded the other parts of their lives. They don't stop themselves from doing pretty much anything that feels good. They don't stop for small animals in the road. They don't stop consuming. They don't stop for pretty much anything these days. Stopping can mean, among other meanings, standing or sitting still. We need more of that, whether it is at a traffic light, a STOP sign or in the privacy of our homes.

  2. Larry - thanks for reading, and for the thoughtful comments. You're right - we all need to slow down, stop and pay attention to life, more than we are. It's challenging in a fast paced world, but stopping makes for a better start each day, especially in our time with the Lord. Thanks again...
