The hawk and basketball…

This is the hawk in today's post...siting on my tree.

Sometimes, in the evening after work, I play a little driveway basketball with my sons. We have a few different games that we play and we have a blast with the competition, while trying to keep the fun part high and the competitive part balanced...you know what I mean…

So, as we were playing recently, we heard a strange squealing sound from down at the road…

We quickly looked and couldn't believe what we saw!

It wasn’t a car chase, or a gangster playing loud music (yes, I live in that kind of neighborhood - 80 year old ladies riding gangster with rap music playin’ loud).

It was a hawk, flying down the middle of the road at about 10 feet off of the ground straight down our street...and he had a rabbit in his talons!

It wasn’t the hawk that was squealing...it was the rabbit.

I know that it seems sad, but that’s how life works.

It made me think…

Sometimes the hawk wins.

The hawk has a lot of power, can see the big picture and knows where to hunt. He’s very smart, skilled and knows his territory well. He is patient and persistent and will aim carefully for his goals.  It’s not easy to get away from a hawk when he’s after you.  You can hide for a while, but if the hawk wants something, it’s likely it will get it.  He’s very determined.

The hawk is intense and wins a lot. Pretty hard to get past the hawk.

Oh, and there are only a few hawks...they cover a large territory.

Sometimes the rabbit wins.

The rabbit is not nearly as focused and just simply hops around from spot to spot, eating bits of grass and such. No big challenges in life, or hard goals. They live a pretty easy going life. The rabbit doesn’t sit in intensity looking for it’s next big meal. It just bounces happily around a yard or field. It knows some good hiding spots and knows when to get to them.

The rabbit is carefree and loses sometimes. Pretty hard to get past it’s simple life.

Oh, and there are a huge number of rabbits...they cover a small territory.

Lessons Learned: Whether you are the hawk or the rabbit, go out and win the best that you can today.

Thoughts: Are you going to give up, just because you’re a rabbit?

  1. I don't think it's either/or - - sometimes we need to be a hawk (for example, to accomplish our goals whether work or life) and sometimes we need to be a rabbit (letting go and letting down, giving ourselves some down time). The rabbit reminds me of something Jesus said, "Look at the birds of the air, they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them . . . Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin." What's important is where our heart is (that is, what is the focus of our life)!
